Alfa Laval to Recycle Its Heat Exchangers

Swedish manufacturer, partnering with Stena Recycling, aims to recycle less efficient models.

Swedish manufacturer Alfa Laval, in partnership with Stena Recycling, is launching a program to recycle its heat exchangers, enabling ”up to 100% metal regeneration” as well as replacement of less efficient models.

The partnership is a first step towards a ”circular approach” to Alfa Laval’s product portfolio, and ”an important part of Alfa Laval’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030,” the company said in a statement.

The goal of this new initiative is two-fold:

  • To encourage replacement of less energy-efficient plate heat exchangers by new products. ”This will lead to significant energy savings and reduced CO2e emissions in customers’ processes,” said Alfal Laval.
  • To recycle plate heat exchangers, which contain large amounts of valuable metals that can be reused in new Alfa Laval products, with Sweden-based Stena Recycling’s technology enabling up to100% metal regeneration.

“This is an important step towards a more circular and sustainable approach when sourcing material, manufacturing and supplying our products,” said Susanne Pahlén Åklundh, Alfa Laval’s President of the Energy Division.

The recycling initiative will start in the Nordic region with three types of heat exchangers. ”However, we see great opportunities to expand the scope to other product groups and geographical areas in the future,” she added. ”This initiative is a win-win, to the benefit ofour customers as well as to society.”

“The collaboration with Alfa Laval shows once again what effective circular solutions we can create when we work together,” said Fredrik Pettersson, Managing Director of Stena Recycling Sweden.

”Simultaneously, as the industry receives help with significant energy efficiencies, we ensure a high recycling rate of older and inefficient plate heat exchangers in Sweden,” he noted. ”These materials can be used as circular quality raw materials for new products, including new products that Alfa Laval manufactures."

Alfa Laval recently introduced a more robust brazed plate heat exchanger in its AXP range, designed specifically for CO2 applications.
This is an important step towards a more circular and sustainable approach when sourcing material, manufacturing and supplying our products.”
