INFICON presents propane detector at AHR Expo

During the first day of AHR Expo, an air-conditioning heating and refrigeration tradeshow held January 22-24 at McCormick Place, Chicago, Il., INFICON explained how its Gas-MATE combustible gas leak detector for gas boilers has found other uses.

Michael Wood, technical support engineer – service tools at INFICON, said the detector, which has long been used in gas boilers, is now in demand from the refrigeration industry.

Wood said the technology could be adapted for hydrocarbon refrigerants including propane, isobutene and HC blend R441a.

The adjustable sensitivity of the leak sensors makes detection quick, according to the company.

Wood said MET laboratories had certified the product intrinsically safe, a safety body similar to UL that operates in the U.S., for use in combustible/explosive environments, Wood said.

This is significant as more companies in the U.S. and around the world opt for propane technology.

Using the detector, technicians servicing propane equipment can tell whether systems are leaking and therefore whether they are safe.
