GEA Refrigeration Technologies was chosen as the compressor supplier in a chiller project for a Kuwaiti petrochemical plant. GEA Bock ATEX compressors feature several safety modifications and have successfully demonstrated their reliability even under the extreme climate conditions encountered in Kuwait.

In 2011, GEA Refrigeration Technologies supplied the GEA Bock ATEX compressors to HVAC & Refrigeration Engineering (HVACR) Ltd., a provider of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions for clients in the oil and gas, marine, and petrochemical industries to master “the Kuwait Chiller Challenge”.

“The Kuwait Chiller Challenge”

The chillers are installed in the climate control centre of a petrochemical plant in Kuwait. HVACR Ltd. was contracted to develop and manufacture 27 chiller units for its client in Kuwait, where temperature in summer can reach as high as 50°C. Due to these extreme climate conditions and the risk of explosion in the control-center area, GEA was asked to support HVACR Ltd. in this project.

HC compressors with safety consideration

For various applications, such as commercial refrigeration in supermarkets, hydrocarbons have established themselves as another natural alternative besides CO2. GEA is the first European manufacturer who offers compressors that conform to the ATEX machine category. Within the European Union, electrical and mechanical machinery operated in explosive atmospheres must comply with the ATEX (Atmospheres EXplosibles) conditions. The system designer must use correspondingly marked and certified components for these applications. Due to the flammability of hydrocarbons, GEA has made some safety related modifications:

  • Heat protection thermostat as standard
  • Oil sump heater as standard
  • Special oil charge
  • Motor protection MP10 supplied separately for an external installation (e.g. in the switch cabinet)

GEA Bock ATEX compressor meets all climate and safety requirements

GEA Bock ATEX compressor demonstrated its reliability and stability under the extreme conditions encountered in Kuwait. The chillers are required to maintain constant water temperatures in the range between 25°C and 30°C. At the same time, the chiller must also be certified by the ATEX directive of the European Union for use in such hazardous areas. The GEA Bock ATEX-compliant compressors passed the test held by the contract companies under extreme temperatures (between – 40 °C and +60 °C) without difficulty and the chiller units also achieve full ATEX requirements.
