U.S. Assistant Energy Secretary visits all-natural refrigerant store, as energy efficiency flagship

This week, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy Dr. David Danielson toured SUPERVALU’s first all-natural refrigerant grocery store in Carpinteria, California, as part of the US Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge. The recently upgraded store is expected to cut its annual energy use by 30% or $100,000 compared to its 2010 baseline and was selected as one of three sites in California to showcase its new energy-efficient designs. + VIDEO

Retailer SUPERVALU, one of the main participants of the Better Buildings Challenge and a founding member of the GreenChill Partnership has over the years invested in various types of systems ranging from glycol to ammonia. The latest installation at the Albertson’s Carpinteria store, which stayed open throughout the remodel, is an innovative ammonia installation that has a Mayekawa ammonia primary system on top of a Hill PHOENIX CO2 system for the medium temperature cascaded to a DX system on the low temperature side. Specifically the system includes:
  • Ammonia primary system with 250 lbs (approximately 113 kg) of ammonia located in an outdoor enclosure that will condense CO2;
  • A water cooled system that allows for a reduction in refrigerant charge;
  • “Combined” CO2 refrigeration system with one vessel that contains liquid pumped to the low and medium temperature display cases and walk-in cabinets;
  • Propane (R290) in self-contained merchandisers

Carpinteria’s supermarket one of the most efficient in the nation

“Carpinteria is leading the charge in terms of energy efficiency and Albertsons is right there at the head of the pack,” said Danielson.

He also noted that the U.S. could save up to $40 billion per year if the Better Buildings Challenge is met. The Better Buildings Challenge joins over 100 partners together in a collaborative competition to reduce their energy consumption. Together, the participating organisations have committed close to $2 billion to update or redesign a combined 2 billion square feet of space nationwide.

Carpinteria’s supermarket, which utilises a combination of alternative air conditioning sources and an arsenal of upgrades like LED lighting and sealed doors on refrigerated shelves to conserve power in addition to the HFC-free refrigeration system, is one of the most efficient in the nation.

About the Better Buildings Challenge

Launched by President Obama in 2011, the Better Buildings Challenge is a unique partnership between public and private leaders to reduce energy use in US commercial and industrial buildings. Partners, including U.S. companies, universities, school districts and state and local government, not only commit to an aggressive energy savings goal to reduce the energy used across their building portfolios by 20% or more by 2020, but they also agree to showcase their efforts so that other organisations can benefit from their investments.
