Heineken 2010 sustainability report: global rollout of hydrocarbon coolers

Aiming for a 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of its installed fridge base by 2020, Heineken is rolling out hydrocarbon refrigerant bottle coolers at a global scale. Regarding draught beer, the company says it will be pilot testing in 2011 the ‘green’ coolers that it initiated developing last year, with a view of rolling these out in 2012.

In April 2011, the Dutch brewing company Heineken N.V. published its 2010 sustainability report, ‘Brewing a Better Future’. The report summarises Heineken’s delivery against its public commitments, as well as overall progress on the company’s global sustainability strategy, inter alia regarding refrigeration.

Hydrocarbon bottle coolers: low carbon footprint and low energy consumption

Heineken’s policy is that - whenever technically and legally possible - every new fridge it buys will include:
  • The safe and more environmental friendly hydrocarbon refrigerant
  • LED illumination
  • A thermostat with an energy management system for large fridges (above 300 litres)
“We aim to serve our consumers a quality beer, using best in class equipment with the lowest environmental impact”, said Kirsten Barnhoorn, Sustainability Manager at Heineken. “Therefore, we decided not only to implement hydrocarbon, but also to include other significant energy reduction measures to reach our ambition of energy reduction of 50 per cent on our cooling equipment and further reduction of the carbon footprint”, she added.

The company expects that when these three elements are combined, an energy reduction of at least 35% as well as lower maintenance costs and a longer lifespan for the fridges can be achieved.

The company reports that in 2010, 80% of their new fridges met at least one of the above standards.

To monitor progress Heineken is developing a test protocol to determine the energy consumption of the new green fridges against their baseline fridges.

At the same time, the brewer has been working with suppliers such as Frigoglass and Klimasan to meet their specifications globally.

Pilot testing new draught beer coolers

The company undertook in 2010 a review of draught beer coolers for pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés and assessed that there was not yet a beer cooler that met their specifications. Subsequently, Heineken initiated the development of ‘green’ draught beer coolers that it will be pilot testing in 2011 with a view of rolling them out in 2012. The brewer estimates that the re-engineering of its David Draught® beer installations will result in energy savings of more than 35% and even higher carbon footprint reduction.
