SAE International has acknowledged that HFC-1234yf faces rising opposition in the US as a replacement for R134a in car A/C. Too high and unforeseeable costs, pending patent issues, and a likely retrofit of 1234yf systems with R134a could limit its use to only a few OE installations. Even long-standing HFO proponents now again bring a secondary-loop system into play, where hydrocarbons could be used.
