ATMOsphere America Conference to Feature U.S. EPA and Green America

The 2021 edition of the ATMOsphere America conference will feature presentations from two officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a keynote by the Climate Campaigns Director of NGO Green America, and a session addressing the health and environmental impact of HFO refrigerants.

At the Policy & Standards session, Cindy Newberg, Director of the Stratospheric Protection Division at the EPA, will present an overview and updates on the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020 (AIM Act) which directs EPA to address climate-damaging hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by phasing down production and consumption, maximizing reclamation and minimizing releases from equipment, and facilitating the transition to next-generation technologies through sector-based restrictions. Newberg will be joined by Glenn Gallagher, Air Pollution Specialist at the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and Taryn Finnessey, Acting Executive Director and Policy Director at the U.S. Climate Alliance, who will provide updates on state actions on HFCs.

In a separate presentation, Kersey Manliclic, the new Manager of the EPA GreenChill program, will talk about GreenChill’s voluntary partnership with supermarkets to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change.

The event’s keynote will be given by Beth Porter, Climate Campaigns Director at Green America. She will talk about what makes refrigeration one of the most important and relevant topics in the world and how sustainable refrigeration is crucial to combatting climate change.

The program will also include an Impacts of Refrigerants panel discussing the health, safety and environmental effects of refrigerants. In particular, the panelists will  delve into the latest on potential concerns about the increased use of HFOs. The panel will include Cora Young, Associate Professor and Rogers Chair in Chemistry, at York University in Toronto, Canada, and Thomas Frank, CEO of Refolution Industriekälte.

End users will have their share of the day’s limelight with representatives from Roche Bros and Emblem Cranberry sharing their experiences with CO₂ and hydrocarbon refrigerants — including benefits, challenges and future plans.

Attendees interested in the bigger global picture will see this addressed in a session with ATMOSphere’s Ilana Koegelenberg, who will sharer the latest market and policy trends from around the world, including selected data from ATMOsphere’s Annual Market Intelligence Report.
