The U.K. manufacturer’s compressors suit natural refrigerants.

U.K.-based refrigeration manufacturer J & E Hall will highlight its single screw compressors, which suit most refrigerants, including natural refrigerants such as ammonia, at the Virtual Trade Show next week.
The Virtual Trade Show is a 24-hour live event that will take place around the world on September 1-2. Clean cooling accelerator shecco (publisher of this website), will host the event. It is free to attend and interested parties can register here.
J & E Hall, part of the Japan-based Daikin group, “has pioneered the development of refrigeration technologies for over 130 years and the HallScrew single screw compressor has been at the heart of its product range for over 40 years,”according to a company press release.
HallScrew open-drive screw compressors use a simple design to ensure reliable and lasting service, the company said. Each compressor uses three moving parts: one main rotor that meshes with two opposing star wheels, according to the company website. The star wheels are composed of a composite material, “HallPlas,” which suits high pressure applications and all natural refrigerants.
The standard units come in three models, each with four sizes to cover a variety of applications at 50/60Hz.
New generation models (HSO 4225/6/7, HSO 5200, HSO 6200) feature fixed or variable volume ratio.
“Newer generation models have been designed to operate in higher-pressure environments addressing the growing market for heat pumps,” said J & E Hall.

The newer models designed for 40 bar “allow the compressors to condense gases at a much higher temperature, ideal for working with ammonia (NH3) and other natural refrigerants.”
The company will also feature its HSO5228V compressor. This is used for a district-heating application in Switzerland producing water at 70°C (158°F), as part of an inverter-driven ammonia-based heat pump system, J & E Hall said.
The HSO5228V compressor “can condense vapor to water at much higher temperatures than before and has been installed to help supply low-cost hot water to homes and businesses,” said J & E Hall. “With 2.4MW of heat output and COPs of 4.2, the heat pump system is highly efficient and offers low lifecycle costs.”
Single screw compressors are also part of the company’s Aquachill air-cooled ammonia packaged chiller range, which will be featured at the trade show.
“The low-charge ammonia chillers use ammonia natural gas with zero GWP,” J & E Hall said. “A great example of our Aquachill in action has provided 424kW (120.5TR) of cooling to a meat processing plant in Poland, with a temperature range between -3°C and -6°C [26.6°F and 21.2°F].”
