With more than 30 presentations at this year's debut ATMOsphere Australia, three companies will show their latest findings on their hydrocarbon-based projects.
The ATMOsphere Review Board is proud to announce the case study selection for the conference on 16 May.
Congratulations to Carter Retail Equipment, EcoChill (NZ), and The Natural Refrigerants Company (Australia), who will present the following case studies at ATMOsphere Australia 2016:
Self contained display cases with a hydrocarbon refrigerant running on a water loop for heat rejection, Ian Garvey, Carter Retail Equipment
The presentation will examine a system developed by Carter Retail Equipment (CRE) in 2009, deployed throughout the UK with over 20,000 systems currently in the field, and the technology migrating into Europe and South East Asia. In 2015 a project was delivered to Coles Supermarkets to validate the system benefits as the first scheme in Australia to feature higher system charge hydrocarbon self-contained cases.
Due to increased ambient conditions in Australia, a new variant of the system was designed using a Dry Air Cooler instead of chilled water as the cooling medium, providing a major benefit in terms of capital cost. The multiple benefits include non-existent leakage, the use of the natural refrigerant R1270, which provides energy savings and capacity benefits, and finally reliability since the system is factory-assembled and involves no control valves or system access.
The case study will showcase the results, which indicate 16% reduction in maintenance (system) and 39% reduction in direct and indirect emissions (leaks) in the UK. CRE has installed power monitoring at the Coles Coburg site and recently at the Coles Yarraville site as a comparison, and the data being collected will form an integral part of the presentation.
Comparison of synthetic and hydrocarbon system for Kiwifruit Cold Store, Matthew Darby, EcoChill
The technical paper compares a synthetic refrigeration system with a next-generation EcoChill hydrocarbon system for a Turners & Growers kiwifruit store in Kerikeri, New Zealand. The highly efficient hydrocarbon system includes a drastically reduced refrigerant charge.
EcoChill is the leading manufacturer and supplier of commercial chiller systems using hydrocarbons and has also worked on the North Island’s first subcritical CO2 (2010), and transcritical CO2 store (2012) for the New World supermarket chain.
Opportunities for hydrocarbon chillers in Australia, Ian Tuena, The Natural Refrigerants Company
The presentation makes the case for hydrocarbon chillers with minimal charges as a practical solution for small chilled water or glycol systems, for a multitude of system applications. Whether providing condenser cooling for CO2 systems or chilled water for air conditioning and process applications, hydrocarbon systems are the logical final refrigerant solution for light commercial applications.
Ideally suited for high ambient temperatures, hydrocarbons are energy-efficient and carbon-neutral, offering the Australian market a truly natural, future-proof solution.
