A key challenge in the transition away from HFCs foreseen by the European F-Gas Regulation is training. The European Association of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Contractors (AREA) estimated that 3 years ago roughly 10% of technicians were educated to handle different natural refrigerants including CO2 (R744), ammonia (R717), and hydrocarbons (R600, R600a and R290).
Many organisations, including the German Federal Agency (UBA), under the Climate Action Programme 2020, are taking a pro-active approach to promoting natural refrigerants and therefore also strengthening their technical advisory services, training and education on natural refrigerants.
With the spotlight set on these issues, compressor manufacturer Secop, together with VULKAN Lokring, has produced a 17-minute video made for technicians servicing hydrocarbon compressors in domestic refrigeration.
How to service R600a/R290 Secop compressors for domestic refrigeration
With over 51,000 views for the original version, the updated step-by-step compressor servicing video outlines the following:
1. Troubleshooting/ how to check the refrigeration circuit
2. Refrigerant disposal (for natural refrigerant compressor models only)
3. Disassembling the compressor/ filter dryer
4. Assembling the filter dryer / compressor with specific LOKRINGs
5. Leak testing
6. Evacuating and charging (0.060 kg of R600a)
7. System checking/ sealing/ safety testing
