In July 2011, Australia  announced its ‘Securing a clean energy future’ plan, under which the country will cut 159 million tonnes a year of carbon pollution from our atmosphere by 2020 - the equivalent of taking over 45 million cars off the road.

Under the plan, carbon will be priced at $23 AUD (about €16.9) per tonne from 1 July 2012, and will rise by 2.5 per cent each year during a three-year fixed price period until 1 July 2015. The price mechanism will then transition to an emissions trading scheme, where the price will be determined by the market.

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) will face a carbon price that will be implemented through existing legislation on synthetic greenhouse gases.
