Applications to help organizations implement the innovative CaaS model close on February 14.

Thomas Motmans of BASE talks about Cooling as a Service.

BASE has published a short video Q&A explaining what the game-changing Cooling as a Service (CaaS) business model is, and why HVAC&R companies should apply for the CaaS Incubator. Applications close February 14.

The three-minute video features an interview with Thomas Motmans, Sustainable Energy Finance Specialist at the Switzerland-based Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE). BASE and the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) are working together on CaaS, aimed at reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions from cooling through a pay-per-service model for more efficient cooling systems.

To mainstream the model around the world, BASE is now accepting applications for incubator projects from technology providers offering highly efficient air-conditioning or refrigeration solutions using low-global warming potential (GWP) or natural refrigerants. From all the applicants, five companies will be selected to receive free support from BASE to integrate CaaS into their business lines.

In the video, Motmans talks about what CaaS is and the benefits of joining the incubator. He also explains what will happen if your application is successful and comments on the impact of the CaaS project on the industry and environment. “We see that Cooling as a Service is really going to revolutionize the industry, just like servitization has been doing so for other sectors – and at a very fast pace,” he says in the video.

Market accelerator shecco, publisher of this website, and BASE signed an official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 20, 2019 to promote the CaaS Initiative.

BASE will head to Cape Town, South Africa, on March 9 to speak to the local HVAC&R industry about the cooling-as-a- service (CaaS) business model. They will host the first-ever (free) CaaS matchmaking event – taking place the afternoon before the ATMOsphere Cape Town

event – to help equipment providers, end users and funders of HVAC&R technology in South Africa and the rest of the continent learn more about CaaS and how to implement it.
