The propane heat pump was awarded the Kältepreis (cooling award) for sustainable refrigeration.

The ESyCool green by Viessmann was among the winners of Germany’s annual Kältepreis, awarded by the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety for innovation in sustainable refrigeration. The product had already been awarded with the German Innovation Price for Climate and Environment

After winning this second award for the ESyCool green, Viessmann Managing Director Jörg Straßburger said: “These awards naturally encourage us to continue working on new energy solutions that will help preserve the natural foundations of life for future generations.”

The highly efficient heat pump using propane (R290) is designed to be used in supermarket applications. It was developed in cooperation with German discount retailer ALDI Nord.

According to Viessmann, around 95% less refrigerant is required when using the ESyCool green. Energy consumption is greatly reduced as well. With this system, Viessmann also claims to enable climate-neutral, zero-emission stores.

The German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety granted the ESyCool green the award for innovative and energy-efficient technologies in the field of refrigeration and air-conditioning technology. The award was handed out during the Energy Days in Berlin (7-9 May 2018).

Currently, there are more than 120 million air-conditioning and refrigeration units in Germany. The systems emit 60 million tons of COequivalent (CO2e) per year.

To give an incentive to reduce the damaging potential of refrigeration, the German government decided to hand out the award, which is endowed with over €50,000 in total.
