Danfoss is the only industrial company on the new panel, which aims to increase access to sustainable and affordable cooling solutions worldwide.

Danfoss joined a posse of distinguished environmental and climate advocates on the United Nation’s Cooling for All panel this week during the UN General Assembly and Climate Week NYC.

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), an international initiative spearheaded by former Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, announced the company’s appointment.

The cooling panel was created by SEforALL as a call to action and leadership in the world of sustainable cooling solutions. Danfoss Cooling’s president, Jürgen Fischer, will serve as the company’s panel representative.

We need to take it a step further by providing cooling in a sustainable way that tackles global warming at the same time.”

“Cooling has a powerful influence on our life and health,” Fisher said, “It keeps our food fresh and safe to eat, helps make vaccines available throughout the world, and keeps our homes and offices comfortable.”

“All people should have access to these essentials,” he added. “But we need to take it a step further by providing cooling in a sustainable way that tackles global warming at the same time.”

By 2050, according to estimates from the UN Economic Commission for Europe, the world’s population will reach 9 billion and a majority (70%) of that population will reside in a city. That, the estimate continues, is the equivalent of adding to the world 235 cities the size of Paris.

Global warming, rising temperatures, and the resulting need for more cooling solutions could put a further burden on the climate. The work of the Cooling for All panel, according to Rachel Kyte, CEO of SEforALL and secretariat for the panel, “will therefore be critical to develop the evidence we need to understand the challenges and opportunities of providing cooling access for all.”

The panel—which is co-chaired by President Hilda Heine of the Marshall Islands and Dr. Vincent Biruta, minister of natural resources for the Republic of Rwanda—will bring the work of the Paris Climate Agreement, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the Montreal Protocol’s Kigali Amendment in intersection.

“Danfoss looks forward to contributing our deep knowledge in this field,” Fisher said, “and helping speed up implementation of energy-efficient and clean [cooling] solutions.”
