American compressor manufacturer Tecumseh has been active in the refrigeration industry since 1934. With market-opportunities for natural refrigerants expected to dramatically increase in the coming years, Tecumseh is offering an eco-line of compressors and condensing units designed for hydrocarbon refrigerants R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane), with global distribution. Hydrocarbons21.com is proud to welcome Tecumseh as a Gold Partner.

For over 70 years, Tecumseh has been at the forefront of compressor manufacturing. Based in Ann-Arbor, Michigan, the company specialises in the production of a full-line of hermetically-sealed compressors for residential & specialty air conditioning, home refrigerators & freezers, and commercial refrigeration. Besides compressors, Tecumseh also offers a complete line of indoor and outdoor condensing units, evaporator coils, heat pumps, complete refrigeration systems and components.

Hydrocarbon product development

Driven by innovation for over seven decades, today Tecumseh meets demands of the rapidly changing refrigerant landscape by investing in research and development laboratories in North America, Europe, South America and India, as well as partnering with international universities to study the impact their products have on the environment.

Hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerant-ready compressors are nothing new to Tecumseh; in fact they have been in production for the last 12 years. The family of eco-compressors features over 150 models, mostly applicable to commercial refrigeration applications. Tecumseh’s AE2 high-efficiency models are part of the next generation of light-commercial compressors. Although these compressors still support traditional refrigerants, their performance is optimised for hydrocarbons R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane). Already in the early stages, it is anticipated that the strict legislation on HC use will soon be eased in North America, allowing for a better understanding of HC refrigerants and their overall viability.

Advantages and applications

Compared to standard systems, a hydrocarbon system can achieve up to a 15% improvement on energy consumption. The commercial refrigeration compressors and condensing units by Tecumseh are compact in design and especially well suited to refrigerated displays and cabinets, ice machines, bottle coolers and beer coolers.

Company history

Tecumseh’s international expansion began shortly after WW2. Food preservation equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning was in demand and the company began working with foreign licensees. Today Tecumseh manufactures on four continents for customers worldwide.
