This month marketing and communications specialist shecco has launched its first ever North American Natural Refrigerants survey, aimed at collecting industry perspectives on the use of natural working fluids in Canadian, Mexican and US heating, air conditioning and refrigeration markets. The launch of the North American survey, follows the successful 2011 global HVAC&R survey, the results of which were published in the “GUIDE 2012: Natural Refrigerants – Market Growth for Europe”. Results from the North American survey will be published in the second of shecco’s reports for business and policy leaders, “GUIDE 2012: Natural Refrigerants – North America’s Market Potential”.

Critical time for natural refrigerants in North America
Over the past two years a series of game changing developments for the natural refrigerant market have taken place in North America:
  • November 2010: The Consumer Goods Forum announced that it would start phasing out HFCs as of 2015 and replace them with non-HFC refrigerants; 
  • November 2011: Hill PHOENIX Inc., a Dover Company, acquired Danish CO2 specialist Advansor, creating the world’s largest CO2 manufacturer and enabling Hill PHOENIX to bring CO2 refrigeration transcritical technology to the North American market;
  • December 2011: the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved three hydrocarbons refrigerants for use in household and small commercial stand-alone refrigerators and freezers.
