Hydrocarbon products and market prospects from the AHR Expo in Chicago - Part 2

The US trade show AHR Expo demonstrated that many American and European companies are getting ready for a rising demand of hydrocarbon components on the US market. With new compressors, charging equipment or new hydrocarbon blends the industry tries to seduce the partly still sceptical customers to take part in the new movement.

When talking to the different exhibitors and visitors, the issues of safety, servicing and training for hydrocarbon equipment were the most discussed. The companies feel that there is definitely something happening and the interest and actual demand has already increased. However, the SNAP approval is just the first step and more education, information and approved standards are needed for a serious implementation of hydrocarbon products.

Below, the second part of the list of companies that hydrocarbons21.com visited at their booths to report about newest hydrocarbon product and market developments:

Galileo - Italian specialist for process equipment displayed how to achieve safety with hydrocarbons. Galileo’s automatic evacuating and hydrocarbons charging equipment, including the Frigus k, is ventilated and controlled by gas sensors and ensures high security in use and maintenance. The team also mentioned this as the main barrier for hydrocarbons on the US-market. As for many manufacturers and service personnel the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants is new, they are afraid of safety problems and potentially resulting lawsuits. However, Galileo experienced already a high increase in demand for their hydrocarbon products for the US market and expect this increase to continue at an even higher rate.

Tecumseh - The US-based global manufacturer of compressors and other HVAC systems displayed several hydrocarbon compressors including its all-new AE2 next generation commercial compressors. It is designed for optimal performance with the hydrocarbons R290 and R600a. The compressor range still supports traditional refrigerants, but since they are optimised for hydrocarbons, Tecumseh underlines its strategy to be part of the growing market for hydrocarbons. At the AHR Expo the company experts also gave mini workshops on what installers need to know about hydrocarbon refrigerants.

GMCC/Midea - As one of China’s leading air conditioner producers Midea has continuously invested in the research and development of market applications of natural refrigerants. Midea’s R290 compressor production line in China has become an official Montreal Protocol Implementation Demonstration Project. At the AHR Expo, they showcased their R290 air conditioner compressor.

Gree - The Chinese manufacturer displayed information about their project with German GIZ for R290 air-conditioning units in the Maldives. In May 2011, Gree R290 air conditioners were installed at the Ministry of Housing and Environment and at the Convention Centre in Male, Maldives as pilot installation. The Gree production facility for the R290 units was officially opened on 14 July 2011.

ICA / MicroGroove - The International Copper Association (ICA) promoted its MicroGroove copper tubes at the AHR Expo. A recent study supported by ICA showed that they are also suitable for developing safe room air conditioners with R290 refrigerant as using smaller diameter tubes reduces the R290 refrigerant charge.
