UK construction company Willmott Dixon is to build a sustainable Morrisons supermarket in Peterborough, UK, featuring several energy reduction measures that could become standard practice, including the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants throughout the store.
Expected to open to the public in October 2011, the £9.5 million (€10.7 million) 4,162m2 area green supermarket store in Peterborough will use hydrocarbons in its refrigeration system. In the past, hydrocarbon technology had been partly adopted in some of Morrisons retail facilities, however the Peterborough store will be the first one to adopt hydrocarbons throughout the store.
The hydrocarbon technology has previously been tested extensively at the research and development premises of Arctic Circle in Hereford and a trial at Morrison’s Telford store.
A blueprint for the entire industry?
Clive Pople, Willmott Dixon’s retail director hopes that “this will be a low carbon store the entire retail industry will aim to replicate as they look to adopt new ways to reduce reliance on expensive energy and cut running costs. We will use our learning here to be a strategic partner for customers like Morrisons as we help them meet the challenges created by the UK’s ongoing transformation to a low carbon economy.”

- LED lighting throughout the store: The Peterborogh store will be the first in Europe to be entirely lit by LED lighting, which has low energy consumption and is virtually maintenance free for the first 50,000 hours.
- North-facing roof windows that will flood the store with natural daylight
- Photovoltaic panels installed on the south-facing roof
- A Solar Wall system on the south side cladding that heats up air in voids within the cladding and then draws it into the building’s Heating and Ventilation system to reduce the amount of fossil fuel energy required.
- Electric car charging points
- Rainwater harvesting for the toilet flushing system
