A US-based refrigeration company has announced the introduction of a new range of upright fridges and freezers with a hydrocarbon refrigerant option, to be offered through the UK and Ireland. Hydrocarbon refrigerants, long in use in Europe, have been increasing in global commercial use, with US SNAP approval expected in 2011.

The new range of upright cabinets from True Refrigeration combines lower energy consumption, competitive pricing and the option of hydrocarbon refrigerant.

Hydrocarbon refrigeration in an upright commercial cabinet

“Despite the increasing use of undercounters, uprights are still the UK’s most popular commercial cabinets in the quality refrigeration sector,” says John Lilly, marketing director of True UK. “With the relaunch of the True brand our number one priority was to ensure the new products meet the exact requirements of caterers in Britain and Ireland. We believe these uprights set new standards in sustainability and energy saving.

True’s new line is available as either a fridge (0 to 3C) or freezer (-18 to -23C). Standard features include high density foam insulation, self-closing doors, and evaporators, fan motors, condensers and compressors that are 20 to 40% larger than the industry standard. Build options include hydrocarbon refrigerant as an addition.

Hydrocarbon refrigeration globally

Since 1993, hydrocarbon refrigerators have been sold in Mexico, South America, Cuba and parts of Africa, along with Japan, China and throughout Europe. As reported earlier by the Washington Post, pending final SNAP (Significant New Alternatives Program) EPA approval, expected this year, hydrocarbon refrigerators will make their way to the US consumer in 2011.

True refrigeration joins a handful of companies based in the United States that have started using and supplying natural refrigerants in industrial food service equipment. Selected Ben & Jerry's stores received federal approval in 2008 to use hydrocarbon propane freezers, while Coca-Cola invested $60 million to advance HFC-free cooling globally.

True’s refrigerator offering has qualified for the Carbon Trust’s Energy Technology List (ETL), which means buyers can take advantage of significant financial benefits.
