A recently opened Lidl market in the north of Germany implements a new combined heating and cooling technology. The integrated system combines waste heat recovery and a hydrocarbon refrigeration system to cut CO2 emissions by 30%. The leading retailer is planning to equip about 200 new stores with R290 technology by 2012.

Significant energy savings in Lidl’s new store in Achim-Baden Germany can be achieved by using the waste heat from the cooling cabinets to heat the store. The heat is directed to the integral system, which represents the heart of the combined heating-cooling concept. This raises the temperature of the floor heating and at the same time the cold is transported to the cooling cabinets using propane refrigerant. Lidl also states that the use of R290 cabinets is the most energy-efficient and state-of-the-art solution.

In total the new system leads to 100% reduced energy requirement for heating, 30% less CO2 emissions as well as 10% reduction in power consumption for the 1000m2 market. For this reason, the retailer has received a special award for outstanding technical achievements from the German EHI Retail Institute.

More hydrocarbon supermarkets to come

Another Lidl market in this area that also integrates the climate-friendly refrigeration and heating technology will be opened soon one of the many still to come. “We will use this new concept for all new markets, wherever it is possible," said Dirk Anselm, Lidl sales manager.

The Federal Environment Agency (UBA) also stated in its report “Fluorierte Treibhausgase vermeiden - Wege zum Ausstieg” (How to avoid f-gases: pathways to a phase-out) that Lidl announced in 2010 to opt for integrated systems based on hydrocarbons in all new stores to cover all cooling and heating demands. This would amount to about 200 stores featuring R290 technology by 2012.
