Hydrocarbons fly high at German Refrigeration Awards

For the second year, the German government rewarded highly efficient refrigeration systems in order to support energy reduction projects and companies. Energy efficient hydrocarbon systems were among the winning technologies.

Hydrocarbon systems gained two out of a total of nine awards with prizes totaling €52.500 that were awarded in December 2009 in the context of the “German Refrigeration Awards 2009”, organised by Germany’s Federal Department for the Environment.

Austrian-based company AHT Cooling Systems received the 3rd place in the “Refrigeration Management Systems” („Kälteleistungsmanagement-Systeme“), while the 2nd place in the category “Highly efficient refrigeration systems with halogen-free refrigerants” („Hocheffiziente Dampfkälteanlagen mit halogenfreien Kältemitteln“) went to German system manufacturer FUTRON GmbH.

Special speed-controlled propane compressors

AHT received the award for its submission of “Energy Efficient Controller Technology for Ready-to-Use Refrigerator Cabinets”.

“The now award-winning AHT VS system with the environmentally friendly propane gas (R290) as a refrigerant in which special speed-controlled compressors are used ensures, with the help of ultramodern controller technologies, a high energy savings potential of more than 25% compared to conventional ready-to-use refrigerators and freezers”, reads the company’s press release.

The technology avoids peak loads through low starting currents, while the speed control of the compressor allows the energy demand of the system to adapt to the actual refrigeration need, realising energy and hence operating savings.

Propane integrated supermarket refrigeration and heating system awarded

The second place in the category “Highly efficient refrigeration systems with halogen-free refrigerants” went to the system manufacturer FUTRON GmbH for its integrated supermarket refrigeration and heating system using propane as the refrigerant. The system is meant to reduce the cooling energy by 35%.

The company’s ECO Unit is a compact unit for outdoor installation, designed specifically for retail applications (supermarkets and discount markets). The unit takes over all integral system functions of cold and heat, optimally managing the energy flows needed to provide refrigeration, heating and air conditioning services.

More awards for natural refrigerants

German-based company thermea. won the first price in the category “Highly efficient refrigeration systems with halogen-free refrigerants”. The committee awarded the company’s high temperature CO2 heat pump that features highest heating capacity and maximum energy efficiency. The models for industrial applications feature a Coefficient of Performance of up to 5.5 for heating only and up to 8.0 for heating and chilling service in dependence from the operating conditions. Different models allow a high heat output of up to 4,000 kW and outlet temperatures of up to 80°C.

Rationale for the awards

By 2020 the Merkel Administration aims to reduce electric power consumption by 11%. With refrigeration and air conditioning systems using around 14% of the total energy consumption, the German government initiated an award for innovative energy reduction systems in this field. The potential is especially high in this area and many new concepts come from companies that use natural refrigerants due to their superior efficiency properties for different applications.
